By combining her own life story with her quilts and family photographs, Diane Wilson created a show for The Athenaeum in Alexandria, Va., that attracted even more people than expected, as museum quilt shows usually do.

The exhibition also prompted an outpouring of thank-you letters that reveal how well this artist speaks for Everywoman and how much of the best of America is expressed through the quilter’s art.
